Modern Foreign Languages Hub Meeting

The BGGS Modern Foreign Languages Hub and a chance to be involved in the new National Centre for CLIL in Birmingham

Somewhat off my usual topic of school business management, I am promoting my school’s approach to language teaching along with an opportunity for schools to get more involved.

Bordesley Green Girls School runs a primary and secondary language hub affiliated to the
Association for Language Learning and they meet every half term. Participants in the hub look at a wide range of issues including language teaching in primary settings, transition issues impacting on language teaching, successful teaching techniques and there is always an opportunity to swap and share resources.

Our hub activities also give us the chance to share our work on CLIL: Content and Language Integrated Learning. For those who are unfamiliar with this, it is the practice of teaching of subjects using a foreign language. We teach elements of our Key Stage 3 Geography and Science curriculum in French and early indications show that it is having a significant positive impact on MFL outcomes and attainment.

A chance to get involved in the new National Centre for CLIL

Bordesley Green Girls’ School and Sixth Form is looking for 10 schools from both phases to be part of a pilot project between the school and Aston University. Together, the school and the university are establishing a National Centre for CLIL in Birmingham. Project leaders from both Bordesley Green Girls’ and Aston University are keen to support and resource schools willing to undertake an introductory trial of this teaching method.

This school-based CLIL initiative is being led by Headteacher Judith Woodfield, who said,

“We have some secondary and primary schools in our network who are trying out this method and we all enjoy sharing our experiences. We have much support from the key national embassies here in the UK and Birmingham City Council is also backing this exciting project.”

Schools which are interested in joining the project can join the next hub meeting on Wednesday 24th May from 3.35pm until 4.35 pm
